Protect Your Smile: Basketball Mouthguards

Basketball season is in full swing, and whether you’re following March Madness, cheering on your favorite NBA team, or playing recreational basketball yourself, it’s the perfect time to talk about protecting your smile on the court. At Family, Implant & Cosmetic Dentistry, we see firsthand how basketball and dental injuries often go hand in hand, and many of these accidents are completely preventable.

Is Basketball Really a Contact Sport?

While basketball may not have the reputation of football or hockey, it’s absolutely a contact sport. An elbow to the face during a rebound, a collision under the basket, or an accidental hit while driving to the hoop can all result in serious dental injuries. From a knocked-out tooth to a chipped tooth or cracked tooth, these incidents happen more frequently than most players realize. Lip injuries are also common and can be quite painful.

So, do you need a mouthguard for basketball? The answer is a resounding yes, especially if you’re playing school basketball or any organized league where physical play is common.

Understanding Your Mouthguard Options

When it comes to dental protection for sports, not all mouthguards are created equal. Let’s break down your options:

Stock Mouthguards

These are the pre-formed, one-size-fits-all options you’ll find at sporting goods stores. While they’re inexpensive, they typically don’t offer a comfortable fit and can make breathing and speaking difficult during play.

Boil-and-Bite Mouthguards

A step up from stock options, boil-and-bite mouthguards are softened in hot water and then molded to your teeth. They provide better protection than stock versions, but still may not fit perfectly or provide optimal comfort.

Custom-Fitted Mouthguards

The best mouthguard for basketball players is undoubtedly a custom-fitted mouthguard created by Dr. Fadi Raffoul, DMD, at our practice. These are made from impressions of your teeth, ensuring perfect upper teeth protection, superior comfort, and the ability to breathe and speak normally while wearing it.

How to Protect Your Teeth During Basketball

Beyond wearing a sports mouthguard, here are additional tips for dental protection:

Wear your mouthguard consistently during practices and games
Maintain good oral health with regular check-ups and professional teeth cleanings to help ensure your teeth are strong and healthy
Replace your mouthguard when it shows signs of wear, typically at the start of each season
Practice proper mouthguard care by rinsing it after each use and storing it in a protective case

What to Do in a Dental Emergency

Even with the best mouthguard for basketball, accidents can happen. If you experience a dental emergency on the court, knowing what to do can make all the difference:

For a knocked-out tooth, time is critical. Handle the tooth by the crown (not the root), gently rinse it without scrubbing, and try to place it back in the socket if possible. If that’s not possible, keep it moist in milk or saliva. Saving a knocked-out tooth is often possible if you see an emergency dentist within 30–60 minutes.

For a chipped tooth or cracked tooth, rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. Contact our office immediately.
